As part of the collaboration and economic exchange agenda between Chile and Germany established through the Cooperation Agreement on Mining, Raw Materials, and Circular Economy, which was ratified in 2023 by Chile’s Ministry of Mining and Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), Chile’s Minister of Mining, Aurora Williams, will lead a visit to Berlin to hold a series of bilateral meetings with local authorities, technology companies, and research centers, as well as participating in lithium and mineral resources forums.
Between October 9 and 10, the minister will meet with the State Secretary at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, Frank Wetzel. She will also hold several meetings with senior officials from institutions involved in geoscience research, geological outreach, mineral salt processing, and the sustainable use of natural resources, among other areas that offer collaboration opportunities with Chile’s National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin) and the newly created National Lithium and Salt Flats Institute.
«As the largest economy in Europe and the fourth largest in the world, Germany shares our commitment to advancing a sustainable mining industry—one that promotes concrete initiatives toward a circular economy and respects the communities and territories where it operates. For that reason, working together under these principles and exploring opportunities in lithium, geology, and mineral raw materials represents a strategic step toward the kind of mining development the world demands today. For the first time, this effort also shares a common purpose of ensuring the essential supply of key minerals needed to tackle the climate crisis. Both Chile and Germany are committed to deepening our bilateral cooperation to help shape a better future,» said Williams.
«Given its high level of sophistication and technological development, Germany is a key market for promoting investment opportunities—especially in sectors that are essential to the energy transition, such as critical minerals. German companies, some of which are already established in Chile, have the capacity to participate in our market by contributing to activities that go beyond mineral extraction—both as industry suppliers and by adding value, which is where we are placing particular emphasis as an agency,» noted InvestChile Director, Karla Flores.
She also added that the trip will be an opportunity to present the Mining Project Portfolio, a joint platform developed with the Ministry of Mining that includes 22 mining projects worth over US$30 billion. The platform will enable investors and suppliers to access key information about the sector, as well as current and upcoming projects.
The agenda in the German capital also includes the minister’s participation in Chile’s Lithium Day and the 12th Forum for Mining and Mineral Resources, organized by the German-Chilean Chamber of Commerce (AHK Chile), which has alternated between Santiago and Berlin since 2013. This year’s edition focuses on jointly seeking future-oriented solutions for safe and responsible mining, and ensuring a resilient supply of raw materials.
The Chilean delegation in Germany will include Claudia Rodríguez, Acting Executive Vice President of the Chilean Copper Commission (Cochilco); Karla Flores, Director of InvestChile; Hernán Cáceres, Executive Director of the National Lithium and Salt Flats Institute; and Omar Cortés, Head of the General Geology Department at Sernageomin.
